Known as The Spice Island for centuries, the spice trade is one of the island’s most important industries since the abolition of the slave trade.

During the 19th century, Zanzibar was famous as one of the world’s leading spice producers. Offering the world such exotic spices as, chili, garlic, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, saffron, pepper, lemongrass, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Vanilla, aloe vera and herbs are also plentiful.

Your tour begins when our expert tour guide picks you up in the morning at your hotel. The guide will drive you to a local spice farm where you will learn about the history of the spice trade in Zanzibar.

Many spices were introduced by the Portuguese during the 16th century from South America and India. Several hundred years later, the spice trade flourished under Omani rule when the Sultan of Oman promoted spice plantations using slave labor. The spice and slave trades made Stone Town one of the richest cities in Africa.

Locals use many of the spices for their medicinal properties to cure certain illnesses. The women use henna, the perfume tree, and the lipstick tree to prepare cosmetics.

You’ll get to taste a variety of fruits such as guava, pineapple, rose apple, guava, jackfruit, breadfruit, starfruit, passion fruit, durian, banana, and coconut. Try fresh sugar cane, a tasty treat.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat or cap and insect repellent. You’ll need cash if you want to buy any spices, oils, or fresh fruits at the farm.
