Many spices were introduced by the Portuguese during the 16th century from South America and India. Several hundred years later, the spice trade flourished under Omani rule when the Sultan of Oman promoted spice plantations using slave labor. The spice and slave trades made Stone Town one of the richest cities in Africa.
Locals use many of the spices for their medicinal properties to cure certain illnesses. The women use henna, the perfume tree, and the lipstick tree to prepare cosmetics.
You’ll get to taste a variety of fruits such as guava, pineapple, rose apple, guava, jackfruit, breadfruit, starfruit, passion fruit, durian, banana, and coconut. Try fresh sugar cane, a tasty treat.
