A fascinating place to visit while in Zanzibar is Changuu Island. Also known as Prison Island, it’s home to the ruins of a former prison and hospital building built in 1893.
Learn about the intriguing history of the “rebellious slaves” and the criminals imprisoned here. During the 1900s, the prison was transformed into a hospital to help prevent diseases then spreading in Zanzibar.

Our trusted tour guide will pick you up at your hotel and drive you to Forodhani Gardens. There you can walk along the sea-walk in this small park, surrounded by the historic city of Stone Town. Afterward, a boat will take you to the iconic Prison Island.

On the island, you will encounter and interact with the Giant Aldabra tortoises. In 1919, these animals were given to the Sultan as a gift from the British governor of Seychelles. With an amazing beach full of marine life, you can swim in crystal-clear waters. Enjoy snorkeling and be amazed by the many colorful fish near the reef.

If you prefer, take a stroll, relax under the warm sun, and venture into the forest where you will admire the beautiful colony of peacocks strutting their magnificent tails. You can also see beautiful butterflies and maybe spot a Duiker, a native tiny antelope.

After the trip to Prison Island,  you’ll head back to Stone Town for lunch and then visit the most popular sites. Upon returning to Forodhani, you’ll relax with a magical sunset over the city while savoring a tasty Mshikaki dinner.
