If you are a nature enthusiast touring Zanzibar, you must visit Chumbe Island Coral Park, a well-known private nature reserve.

Developed in 1991 and managed by a non-profit company, Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd (CHICOP), the reserve has won several sustainability awards. Awards include the 2019 “Best of Africa” for Sustainable Destinations from ITB Berlin and in 2011, the first Global Ecosphere Retreat (GER) certified by The Long Run Destination.

The beautiful private island of Chumbe lies off the Zanzibar coast and is lined with quiet and pristine beaches, surrounded by a protected coral reef. It is one of the last pristine coral islands in the region.

The 81-acre coral reef houses 90% or 200, of East Africa’s hard coral species, and 400 species of reef creatures. While visiting you might see coconut crabs, green turtles, sharks, or even a humpback whale.

The park itself includes the coral reef sanctuary, plus a forest reserve, an education center, and an ecolodge. Designed for zero impact on the environment, the education center and lodge were sustainably built, with rainwater harvesting, solar water heating, and composting toilets.

Fostering community development and cultural stewardship, local fishermen are trained as park rangers. The Chumbe Environmental Education program provides free island excursions to children, teachers, and community groups.

The tour starts at Mbweni Beach, where our guide will take you to the island by boat.

On your visit, you’ll snorkel, swim, and walk through the park. Tour one of the seven eco-bungalows and taste delicious Swahili cuisine during lunch. Snorkeling gear and wetsuits are provided.
